The dust has finally settled on UFC 226 and International Fight Week. Daniel Cormier, who entered Saturday’s main event as the company’s light heavyweight champion, is now the UFC’s heavyweight champion - the “double champ” as he is being hailed nowadays. But even after a historic UFC card that entertained the masses from the Fight Pass prelims to the PPV portion of the card, a cloud hung over the night’s co-main event.

The Israel Adesanya show has arrived to the UFC at the expense of Hilo native Brad Tavares. Tavares, the No. 8 middleweight in the UFC, started out well in the first and was able to exchange with Adesanya with some effectiveness. However, it didn’t take long for “The Last Stylebender” to impose his will on the Hawaiian, who was cut up badly from an elbow form Adesanya during the fight.

If there’s one certainty heading into The Ultimate Fighter 27 Finale main event featuring Brad Tavares and Israel Adesanya, there’s no love lost. Adesanya has made a name for himself with his kickboxing acumen and his trash talk. On Wednesday, he made a point to the media that his 2-0 record in the UFC means little as he’s fought over a hundred times in kickboxing competitions.

In the heat of competition, the will to win often triumphs over the love of the game - particularly when it comes to sportsmanship. When playing on an equal playing field, any advantage a team can get can not be squandered. But even in the midst of a championship softball game, the Cal A’s Hawaii 16-U softball team didn’t succumb to the pressure of winning for their home state thousands of miles away from the islands.
