    In the summer of 1972, following the passage of Title IX, Dr. Donnis Thompson secured $5,000, sent her newly hired volleyball coach, Alan Kang around Hawaii, and formed the first ever UH Women's volleyball team. On Tuesday night, 45 years and thousands of Rainbow Wahine later, UH celebrated all that those female student athletes have accomplished and how the program has grown since that summer four and half decades ago.

    The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team will seek their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title when it faces top-seeded Long Beach State in the championship match, Saturday, April 22. First serve is 7:00 p.m. PT (4:00 p.m. HT) at the Walter Pyramid.   The third-seeded Rainbow Warriors (26-4) advanced to the title match following a straight-set win over No. 2 seed and defending tournament champions BYU, 25-22, 25-23, 25-22.

For the better part of three hours, in a ferocious wind that made the Georgia pines creak, he had the right yardage for the perfect club to hit every shot he wanted. And then he made the putts, so many that it felt as though he never missed. Hoffman made seven birdies over his last 11 holes for a 7-under 65.

     Four University of Hawai'i football games will be televised nationally as the Mountain West released its national television package for the 2017 season.   Two games will air on the ESPN Networks, UH's MW opener at Wyoming, Sept. 23, in Laramie, Wyo., and a home contest versus San Diego State, Oct. 28 at Aloha Stadium. In addition, two more will be televised on CBS Sports Network, at Nevada, Oct. 7 in Reno, Nev., and the regular season finale versus BYU, Nov. 25 .

    Some of the top pro golfers on the island are going head-to-head this week in a match play event at Hoakalei Country Club. 1987 U.S. Open champion Scott Simpson along with Sony Open standouts like Kevin Hayashi, Nick Mason and Jared Sawada were among the 32 players seeded Monday that will be narrowed down to eight by the end of the day Tuesday.  Wednesday, the top eight will play a stroke play format for a winner-take-all ten thousand dollars.
