    University of Hawai'i sophomore opposite Stijn van Tilburg was the recipient of Off The Block's Bryan Ivie Award, presented to the nation's best opposite. The award was voted upon by a nationwide committee of coaches and media members.   Van Tilburg, a sophomore from Amsterdam, Netherlands, was also one of three finalists for the International Player of the Year Award, which went to Ohio State's Nicolas Szerszen.

The SandBows, who won the inaugural championship in 2016, will defend its title against five other squads, while also looking to bolster its odds for entry into the NCAA Tournament the following week in Alabama.

    The University of Hawai‘i men’s volleyball team placed a league-high seven players on the All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams, which was announced Thursday. Sophomore opposite Stijn van Tilburg and senior setter Jennings Franciskovic were selected to the first team while sophomore libero Larry Tuileta and senior middle blocker Hendrik Mol were named to the second team. For the better part of three hours, in a ferocious wind that made the Georgia pines creak, he had the right yardage for the perfect club to hit every shot he wanted. And then he made the putts, so many that it felt as though he never missed. Hoffman made seven birdies over his last 11 holes for a 7-under 65.

     Four University of Hawai'i football games will be televised nationally as the Mountain West released its national television package for the 2017 season.   Two games will air on the ESPN Networks, UH's MW opener at Wyoming, Sept. 23, in Laramie, Wyo., and a home contest versus San Diego State, Oct. 28 at Aloha Stadium. In addition, two more will be televised on CBS Sports Network, at Nevada, Oct. 7 in Reno, Nev., and the regular season finale versus BYU, Nov. 25 .

    Masters favorite Dustin Johnson took a serious fall on a staircase Wednesday and injured his lower back, and his manager said it was uncertain whether the world's No. 1 golfer would be able to play the tournament.      It was a stunning development on an otherwise quiet day at Augusta National, where the course was shut down at 1:30 p.m. because of storms.

    This weekend will be the final home stand of the regular season for the University of Hawaii men's volleyball team when they host CSUN.  In all likelihood it won't be the last time the Rainbow Warriors play at the Stan Sheriff Center this season being that they're currently seeded to host in the first round of the MPSF Tournament.  It is, however, the last guaranteed match at home for the four seniors.

Toeaina has enjoyed a breakout season in 2016-17, ranking sixth in the league with 15.9 points per game in Big West play while shooting 47.2 percent from the field to go with 4.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game with a 1.3 assist-to-turnover ratio.

    It's impossible to fill Dave Shoji's shoes.  Words can't express what he meant to the University of Hawaii women's volleyball program and the amazing run of success in his 42 years in charge.  Robyn Ah Mow Santos admits as much, calling Shoji a once-in-a-lifetime coach.  Upon news of becoming just the third head coach in program history, Ah Mow-Santos admitted she was excited, but nervous.

    Legi Suiaunoa has been promoted to defensive coordinator, University of Hawai'i head football coach Nick Rolovich announced Friday.   Suiaunoa served as defensive line coach last season and succeeds Kevin Lempa, who announced his resignation. Suiaunoa will continue to oversee the  defensive line.

    The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team looks to remain in the Big West title race when they host UC Irvine in a crucial league matchup on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Stan Sheriff Center.   The game will be part of a double-header with the Rainbow Wahine who take on UCSB at 5:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center. The men's game will tip at approximately 7:30 p.m. It will also be a "Blackout" Night with all fans encouraged to wear black UH apparel.

The Rainbow Warriors improved to 12-11 and 6-4 in the Big West with their fourth straight win.   With the victory, UH moved into a tie for third in the Big West standings and are just 1.5 games out of first place.
