If Yancy Medeiros beat Donald Cerrone this past Sunday night, the outlook of the UFC’s welterweight division would have changed dramatically. Maybe Medeiros, who was ranked No. 15 in the division, would garner enough attention for a potential Top 5 fight against an elite 170-pounder. Unfortunately, the UFC’s plans to develop Medeiros into a more marketable fighter were thrown out the window after a first-round knockout loss to Cerrone.

Kahuku High School senior running Enoch Nawahine was a battering ram for the Red Raiders this season, helping his team win an OIA championship. But up until a month ago, Nawahine had zero offers to play collegiate football despite tearing through opposing defenses while racking up 985 yards on 153 carries (6.4 yards per carry average) and 11 touchdowns. Nawahine’s last chance to shine for scouts was during the 2018 Polynesian Bowl, and he didn’t disappoint.

The 2017 NFL regular season is officially over. Now, it’s time for playoff football. This weekend kicks off the Wild Card round of the playoffs, featuring the likes of St. Louis graduate Marcus Mariota of the Tennessee Titans and former Hawaii Preparatory Academy standout Max Unger for the New Orleans Saints. But just because the regular season is over doesn't mean that the islands aren’t still well-represented in the NFL.
