Tech Summit Expected To Pump Millions Into Hawaii's Economy

WAIKIKI (KHNL) -- Hawaii's economy is expected to receive a boost, as thousands of people gather in Waikiki for an international technology summit.

Cisco Systems is hosting the four-day event, and says the attendees represent more than 1,000 companies and 90 countries.

Scott Kaye of technology solutions provider GTSI checks out the schedule for Cisco's summit at the Hawaii Convention Center. What's he looking forward to?

"Meeting with our peers at Cisco and seeing what new programs they're putting in place," he said.

But the first-time visitor to Oahu is also excited about experiencing paradise.

"We did a little bit of snorkeling and went to Diamond Head, relaxing on the beach, eating out," Kaye said.

The event, which includes a technology trade show, is expected to attract an international delegation of more than 3,000 participants. Organizers say that translates to $15 million in visitor spending, and $1.4 million in state tax revenue.

"It's a huge revenue stream," Kaye said. "I had no idea how large it was."

This is the second time Cisco has held its partner summit here. Washington DC-based Amy Stuart is thrilled to be back.

"I just love the island itself," she said. "It's beautiful. You know, there's a lot to see and the people are just fantastic."

But one thing concerns her.

"Unfortunately, I spend more than I should," Stuart said while laughing. "The shopping is fabulous where we're at, so love to do a lot of shopping."

Hawaii loves that you do, too.

The last time the summit was held at the Hawaii Convention Center was in 2004.
