(KHNL) The decommissioned ships that now sit idle in Pearl Harbor may be brought back to life. Instead of battles on the sea, these ships would be used to fight the homeless problem here in Hawaii.
Retired Navy Chief Petty Officer Tom Mccrea wants to bring the former USS Acadia back to its glory days. His plan is to set up for eight hundred homeless. Mccrea doesn't only want to give the homeless a place to sleep, he wants to give them the means to get off the streets. He says, "if we don't help the individuals being able to improve their earning capabilities, we're doing them a disservice."
The on-site job training is what attracted Gary Shields to the project, "this ship is a floating campus. 32 technical training platforms that can literally transform the lives of these people and society as a whole."
The project has been in the works for two years. The plans have been drawn up, the manpower is there, now all that's needed is the funding to make this idea float about 600,000 dollars.
