HELEMANO FARM (KHNL) - Many people have their eyes on turkey and stuffing. But one man has been focused on the perfect local Christmas tree.

Aaron O'Brien has been a farmer for most of this life. It was his father who inspired to grow Christmas local.

Something you wouldn't think of in Hawaii, but it seems to be working.

This scene looks something you would see in Oregon. But no, it's right here in Hawaii.

Aaron O'Brien grows Norfolk and the Leland Siprus on his farm.

"With the new environments, we have actually tried thirty varieties and the Leland Syprus is the only one that's made it," said O'Brien.

There are many advantages to buying a local tree this holiday season. It is cut fresh right here. Mainland shipments are months old before they reach the islands.

The saying at this farm is "locally grown, pick your own."

"You can pick a tree from ten to fifteen thousand trees," said O'Brien.  "I've seen people here for half a day."

These trees tower up to twenty feet. The Norfolk is also a good tree for those with allergies.

Once you take your tree home, these types can last for months.

And the one good thing about these trees, they don't shed!

O'Brien also sells baby plants in pots. You can grow one yourself, but you be patient, it takes several years until it's full grown.
