George Terry Kanalu YoungMANOA (KHNL) - A long-time University of Hawaii at Manoa professor and a founding faculty member of the School of Hawaiian Studies has died.
George Terry Kanalu Young passed away on Sunday, August 31 at Queen's Medical Center. He was 54 years old.
He has been at Queen's since July fighting muscle spasms and other complications related to his paralysis of 39 years.
Despite his paralysis, caused by a driving accident in 1969, George lived a full life, graduating from UH and receiving his doctorate in Hawaiian Studies.
"Kumu Young has been an amazing intellect, a true patriot and one of the great humanists in our community," said Maenette Benham, Dean of UH Manoa's Hawaiinuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge. "How he chose to live his life is an inspiration and reminder of what it means to be kind, humorous and humane."
Professor Young was awarded the 2007 June Jones Foundation Community Service Award for outstanding community contributions.
In 2002, he was given the Frank P. Kernoghan Award from Kamehameha Schools for outstanding contributions to Hawaiian music and culture education.
George was survived by his parents, brother and sister.
Funeral services are pending.
