Ambesse Tollosa in 2006HONOLULU (KHNL) - Ambesse Tolossa, the men's champion in the 2007 Honolulu Marathon has been disqualified after the US Anti-Doping Agency reported that they had found opiates in his system. Tolossa, an Ethiopian national, was also suspended by his country's sports federation in the wake of this finding. Tolossa will be banned from international competition until April 2010.
The 2007 runner-up Jimmy Muindi of Kenya will be awarded the title, his sixth for the Honolulu Marathon as a result of Tolossa's disqualification. Muindi will also receive the $40,000 prize for coming in first. Tolossa never received the prize money as it is the policy of the marathon to withhold the money until all banned substance testing is complete.
The Honolulu Marathon began testing the top men's and women's finishers after the 2006 women's champion tested positive for excessive testosterone levels. That test was performed in March of 2007 and was unrelated to the Honolulu event.
