Hawaii celebrates Kamehameha Day

HONOLULU (KHNL) - Wednesay, June 11 is Kamehameha day in Hawaii.

The State holiday, honors "Kamehameha the Great," the first king of the Hawaiian islands.

His great grandson, Kamehameha the Fifth, first honored the day in 1871.

Kamehameha the Great led a battle to conquer, and then unite, the island chain.

He then formally established the kingdom of Hawaii.

City and state offices are closed on this holiday.

The bus, operates on a state holiday schedule.

But mail delivery and trash pick-up are normal.
