Kuhio Beach is One of Best in America

WAIKIKI (KHNL) -- Kuhio Beach in Waikiki is recognized as one of the best in America, and the State hopes that will help draw more visitors to the islands.

It was named Monday as one of America's best restored beaches by The American Shore and Beach Preservation Association.

Dolan Eversole, a University of Hawaii Geologist says, "We're going to see some national exposure from that, so it will draw attention to Waikiki."

The State is banking on it. A year and a half ago, it invested half a million dollars in replenishing the sand there, that over the years had washed away.

For visitors like James Roddy of Alabama, it's money well spent.

Roddy says, "The sand on this part of the beach is very fine."

So he says, "It's not rough on your feet and your body when you're lying on it." He adds, "Some parts up the way there, are kind of rocky and rough, but this is very pleasant."

Parents with young children find the spot safe for their kids. The rock wall just off shore, keeps the water calm and inviting for toddlers.

Aside from being environmentally conscience, and respectful of coastal erosion, the award also takes in to consideration esthetics.

In award winning style, we find a crew keeping the foliage nice and beautiful for everyone to enjoy.

Earl Kalani is a grounds keeper for the City and County of Honolulu. He says, "We take care of mainly the plants, and the native plants in this area." He says they take care of "everything from the plumerias to the red gingers."

And that helps make one of the world's most famous beaches, also one of the best to share with the rest of the world.

Kalani says he's "very proud to be a part of it."

Five other American beaches were recognized - three in Florida, one in North Carolina, and one in Seattle, Washington.
