Lilo and Stitch is more than just a movie based in the islands. It also features some of the voices of Hawaii. The film's creators recruited the Kamehameha Schools choir for some of the soundtracks.
When you hit theaters to see Lilo and Stitch, make sure you stick around to watch the credits because you'll see the names of a very special group of kids, the children's choir from Kamehameha Schools, who joined the distinguished ranks of Disney musicians.
Shaping young voices - Lynell Bright's calling at Kamehameha schools for 13 years.
In between music lessons came the phone call that changed everything.
"I was literally shaking, it was very exciting," says Bright.
Disney wanted a children's choir for its new animated film Lilo and Stitch.
"It's just a blessing that we have a chance to be a part of this project and represent Hawaii," says Bright.
With its island themes, the kids quickly grasped the music.
"There's multiple rhythms going on with the two parts, but the kids have great ears. They're very musically inclined and they caught on really fast."
Responding to the kids' energy - Disney offered a special treat. Although the movie officially opened to the public this weekend, Disney rented out one of the Dole Cannery theaters in May to give the children's choir a special advance screening.
Lilo and Stitch may spread images of Hawaii around the world, but for a select group of kids it was all about having fun.
"I think for the kids, it's probably hard to comprehend what's happening. Twenty years from now they can look back and say wow," says Bright.
Judging from the early crowds, Disney has a hit on its hands. But even if it doesn't, the children's choir from Kamehameha will have memories that last a lifetime.
