Fire Pits Left by Beach Goers Destroy Volunteer Efforts

WAIMANALO BEACH (KHNL) -- This Earth and Sea Project report takes us to windward Oahu and beautiful Waimanalo Beach.

Fire pits and trash, left by beach-goers are destroying volunteer efforts to keep it clean.

Everyday for three months, Suzanne Frazer helped clear this beach of marine debris.

Now, she's concerned it will one day be covered with broken glass, trash and nails from all the fire pits.

It's been more than one year since the marine debris problem was corrected, now this new issue with fire pits has surfaced leaving dark marks on a beautiful beach.

"We've got the marine debris problem that's turning the sand different colors but now there's all the coals that are black. You see it on the beaches where there have been a lot of bonfires it's not a white beautiful sand beach anymore," Frazer said.

Frazer believes theres a simple solution.

"Ultimately, there needs to be signs that say no fires allowed as well as concrete boulders put up here at Waimanalo bay and Bellows."

"It's a beautiful beach, it would be ashamed to lose it to you know, fire pits and trash and broken glass everywhere," said visitor Linda Accardo.

The Beach Environmental Awareness Campaign Hawaii or B.E.A.C.H., hopes everyone will cooperate in an effort to keep our coastline clean.

Volunteers plan a clean up this Sunday at Kokololio Beach on Oahu's windward side.
