Mom's Soul Food

Kool aid, catfish, and sweet potato pie. Where can you find some good old soul food on Oahu? Sam Choy and Lyle Galdeira show us in Cheap Eats.

Smothered chicken, okra, collard greens, chitterlings, blackeyed peas, and catfish. It's southern style cooking at Mom's restaurant in Waipahu.

Mom's soul food restaurant has been open for a little more than four years. It's located in the Waipahu Shopping Center next to Love's Bakery on Leoku Street.

Plate lunches like fried chicken, pork chops, and catfish start at six to seven bucks. You can get them with sides like fried cabbage, corn bread, and okra. So just how did soul food make its way to Waipahu?

"My daughters had a lot of military friends and they used to come to the house and eat all the time. And we decided, well why don't you get paid for what you be giving away free," says Ida Peppers.

Talk to customers, and they'll tell you this is real southern cooking.

"Well, it's just like you would eat in the south. Home cooked southern food. We go to grandma's house, this is how it used to be," says Steven Kelly.

"Oh and it's so delicious. I mean you just like your fingers it's so good. The chicken, the gravy, the sweet potato pie, the candied yams, the macaroni and cheese," says Marian Penn.

And if you know of a place that offers great food at a reasonable price.let us know about it.
