SALT LAKE (KHNL) - A popular bookmobile on the Waianae coast has been grounded since December. The old van housing it died, but thanks to community support, it gets a new lease on life.
Megan Na'ihe who runs the bookmobile, contacted our "Talk Story" line and we aired her story in January. Since then, people have donated money and services. So much in fact, that Hawaii Literacy was able to buy a used van in good condition.
Mechanical improvements, a fresh coat of paint, and colorful decals get the bookmobile ready for its debut.
"It's so beautiful," said Na'ihe. "I can't believe the difference between the old bookmobile and this one. It's a million times better."
Na'ihe's husband Keli'i is proud of his wife.
"It took a lot of time and I'm very proud of her for dedicating like two months to this and it turned out awesome," he said.
Na'ihe still needs to do some final prep work in order to get the books moved into the new bookmobile. She said she's very grateful to everyone who helped.
But Hawaii Literacy needs to replace books and laptops that were damaged because the old bookmobile leaked.
