HONOLULU (KHNL)- On Wednesday, the Jefferson Award Ceremony was held at the Pacific Club. Created 34 years ago by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Sen. Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard, the award represents a who's who of outstanding Americans. Five individuals from Hawaii were presented with this prestigious award: Loretta Sheehan, Dr. Ramon K. Sy, Masaichi Tasaka, Rachel Ariola and Russell Chun.
Dr. Ramon K. Sy, founder of Aloha Medical Mission, was selected from among today's Jefferson Award recipients to represent Hawaii in Washington , D.C. in June at the national level. Five volunteers will be chosen for their volunteerism.
Past national Jefferson Award honorees have included first ladies Barbara Bush and Rosalynn Carter; former secretary of state Colin Powell; entertainer Bob Hope; and Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
Dr. Sy thanked the many Aloha Medical Mission volunteers and dedicated his Jefferson Award to them. He said, "the (Aloha Medical Mission) volunteers are invaluable ‘heroes' who have contributed to the organization's accomplishments throughout the years."
