HONOLULU (KHNL) - A hybrid car is a consumers' best bet if saving money is their top priority.

"When you're around town driving you're only going to be using the electric motor, and when you go highway speeds that's when you will be utilizing the gas engine," said product specialist Maylee Ho

Here in Hawaii, people love their conventional trucks and S.U.V.'s, and now they have options.

"The response has been great, because of course the utility of it, it's quite versatile, not only are you going to be able carry a family of five, actually now seven, but also the back, you can fold it flat and utilize it as a cargo vehicle."

On a global perspective, the hybrid cars are popular among those who don't drive, but still care about the environment.

"So for example, if you were to drive, and i'm going to use the mainland for example, if you drive a Prius from L.A. to Miami you're only emitting the same amount of emissions as you would from a can of hair spray."

The latest hybrids are also beginning to look more stylish.

"And at the end of the day, you're going to be the smart one, because you're going to be not only looking cool, and looking great, but you're going to be saving a lot of money in your pocket book."

The cost of the hybrid is a bit higher than gas only cars but you will make that money back because of the savings on gas.
