BIG ISLAND (KHNL) - Fire crews on the Big Island are hard at work battling what's turing out to be a stubborn brush fire.

It started Friday evening just around 7 p.m. on the Hilo side of the slopes of Mauna Kea, and as of Sunday morning is still not contained.

The fire is burning in an remote area so no buildings or homes are in danger.

Hilo fire fighters say about 15 hundred acres have burned and can be felt as far away as Kona.

Kona resident, Carole Carraway, said "It was a huge plume of smoke. We could only hunt a half day. It was affecting our dogs' performance and we could smell it all day. It was not enjoyable."
