Sony Unveils The Playstation 3 To Hawaii

(KHNL) - On screen, alien enemies fall before automatic weapons fire. Dust flies and explosions rock the screen. It's all part of a video game Sony hopes will be a big hit this holiday season.

The game runs on a new console that uses eight different computer processors to generate the images on the TV screen.

"One processor might be processing visual or graphics or visual information, another might be processing all the environments that you see," said Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Those processors are at the heart of the Playstation 3, the new video game console that Sony believes will change home entertainment.

"We've established videogaming as legitimate form of entertainment that's not just for kids," Hirai said.

Sony hopes to sell one million PS3's in North America by the end of December. But the company said that may not be enough to satisfy consumers.

"We're doing everything we can to make sure that we meet that demand," Hirai said. "But I think there are going to be some shortages."

The PS3 also sports a Blu-Ray player, Sony's version of high definition DVDs.

"That's going to have a positive spiral in having the consumers think about getting a high definition monitor," Hirai said.

Sony says it has set a new standard for home entertainment technology.

"We're not going to be coming five years from now and say Playstation 3, we're done with that," Hirai said. "We don't do that."
