KANEOHE (KHNL) - In a sight rarely seen on the on the Windward side of Oahu, an estimated one thousand marines hit the streets. The marines with the 1st battalion, 3rd marine regiment setting out for what would be a 5 hour hike. Fully loaded and battle ready.
But this was a chance to bond as a unit, and feel the support of a community. As the marines marched, neighbors cheered. And one little girl summed up the thoughts of many. "Thank you for helping us and you're great."
The hike is part of the marines preparation for a spring deployment to Western Iraq. A hike many of these marines make with heavy hearts, as they mourn the loss of their own, killed in what has been one of the deadliest months in Iraq since the beginning of the conflict.
"It effects them in their hearts as far as losing one of their own" said fellow marine Jeremy Pettet who recently returned from Iraq. "It's what were here for. We're here to serve our country and fight the evils and were willing to do whatever we have to to do it".
