6.7 Earthquake Rattles Hawaii

People living from the Big Island to Kauai felt Sunday's Earthquake.

The first hit at 7:07 a.m., followed by another seven minutes later.

The 6-point-7 magnitude rumbler was centered in Kiholo bay at a depth of about 24 miles.

The second quake measured 6-point-0 on the richter scale.

That one was centered 13 miles northwest of Kawaihae at a depth of 12 miles.

To put these temblors in perspective, the largest previous quake along the northwest coast of the Big Island was a magnitude 4.8.

That was back in may of 1982.

A geophysicist with the Pacific Tsunami Warning center says powerful earthquakes are rare in Hawaii.

He spoke to KHNL News 8 Today on Monday morning.
