Extreme Surfers Paddle & Pedal for Autism

By : Diane Ako

BIG ISLAND (KHNL)- Two big wave surfers paddle and pedal 500 miles across the island chain to raise money for autism.

This is Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama. The normally aquatic duo started their week long challenge by biking on the big island then paddling to Maui. Theyr'e working their way up through all the islands this way. They hope to raise money for a new non-profit film "Beautiful Son", about healing autism. Today the pair is paddling the Kaiwi Channel from Molokai to Oahu.

Kalama reflects on the challenge. "The distance is intimidating, but I'm going to go at my pace. I'm going to be the turtle- slow and steady- and I will get there."

Hamilton says through this fundraiser he expects to "see, feel, and experience different things this week. Hopefully we get people to realize how lucky they are to be healthy."
