(KHNL) Late Thursday afternoon the state Attorney General's office said the personal information of more than 40 thousand people might be circulating out in the public.
Those at risk of identity theft include approximately 22 thousand private citizens and more than 21 thousand members of the Hawaii Government Employees Association and the United Public Workers Union.
State officials say they were notified by the U.S. Secret Service back in January that unnauthorized copies of the personal information had been made and discovered.
They only now disclosed it because they didn't want to hamper the federal investigation. The information in question includes the names and socail security numbers of people who enrolled in certain health and group life insurance plans. If you are among those affected, you will be notfied by the state.
