Maoli Arts Month at Mark's Garage

Downtown Honolulu (KHNL)  A first for Native Hawaiian artists. A new art exhibit is part of something called "Maoli Arts Month" or MAMo. The objective of MAMo is to share and celebrate the depth and breadth of talent within the Native Hawaiian arts community.

The month long event started Friday night. The Arts at Marks Garage hosts some of the art pieces. Nine galleries in all are participating in this native themed First Friday.

Other activities scheduled throughout the month include a keiki art day, concerts, and a first-of-its kind Native Hawaiian arts market.

Noelle Kahana helped organize Maoli Arts Month. "I hope people walk away saying 'I had no idea the Hawaiian artist community is so large, vibrant, and so amazing."

The event culminates in a Native Hawaiian arts market the weekend of April 1 at Bishop Museum. For the complete calendar of MAMo events and artist profiles, visit www.maoliartsmonth.org maoliartsmonth.org.
