Hawaii, Arizona Governors Tour Aging USS Arizona Memorial

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (AP) - Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano toured the deteriorating USS Arizona Memorial Monday.

She pledged her state's support in helping to raise the 34 million dollars needed to build a new visitors center.

The Democrat was joined by Hawaii's Republican Governor Lingle, military leaders and several survivors of the December seventh, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor.

The open-air visitors center was built in 1980 and was designed to accommodate 750-thousand people a year.

But Monday the gateway to the sunken battleship's monument attracts about one-point-six million and is literally bursting at the seams.

Portions of the shoreside building have settled as much as 30 inches and continue to slowly sink, causing cracks in the concrete structure.
