HONOLULU (AP) - A federal government biologist says there was "a lot of damage" to the reef when a ship ran aground near the entrance to Barbers Point harbor.
John Naughton of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the damage was considerable in terms of damaged and broken corals under the ship and large coral heads that were smashed and toppled.
Naughton and other biologists have made an initial survey of the site where the 555-foot Cape Flattery ran aground on February 2nd.
It was refloated early yesterday after its fuel and part of its cargo of granulated cement was removed.
Naughton says the biologists also found a vast, gray pavement where the cement being offloaded from the ship spilled into the sea and hardened in place.
The biologists say it may take years of work to help the reef recover.
