New Web site Offers Safety Tips Against Sharks

From Bethany Hamilton to the fatal shark attack on Maui this month, the ocean's fiercest predator is back in the spotlight.

And the state is hoping people will surf the internet before getting in the water.

Today the state launched a new website aimed at educating the public on all the different species of sharks that live in island waters.

Randy Honebrink with Hawaii's Aquatic Resources Division put the website together.

He says the site answers questions most people in Hawaii ask about sharks.

"Can you give a list of all the people who have been bit by sharks in the last ten years? Can you tell us where it's happened? That's up there," Honebrink explained.

Information about the biology of sharks and safety tips for swimmers are only a mouse click away.

"The safety information is something that's really important and its obviously something we wanted to get out to as many people as possible."

The site could also quickly become a study guide for people around the world.

"All you have to do is put in a few keywords like Hawaii and sharks and this is going to be one of the first things that pops up hopefully."

And if you want even more information about sharks - the researchers at Coconut Island will open to the public for a family shark clinic this Saturday and Sunday.
