(Washington, D.C.) -- Two senators say Europe should ignore a purported offer from Osama bin Laden.
A new tape with a man identifying himself as the al-Qaida leader offers a "truce" with European countries that stop attacking Muslims. It was aired Thursday on Arab satellite networks.
On NBC's "Today" show, Delaware Senator Joseph Biden called bin Laden "a very opportunistic guy" who's trying to drive a wedge between the U.S. and its allies. He says bin Laden can only be effective if Europe responds.
Alabama's Richard Shelby agrees bin Laden is trying to cause a split among allies. He says Europe should be skeptical of any offer from bin Laden. And he adds there can be no negotiations with the terrorist leader.
Meantime, British officials are also rejecting the truce offer. Britain's foreign office says the "right response" is to continue fighting terrorism and not to give in to its demands.
