Body of missing kayaker recovered off Mokulua Islands

KAILUA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Crews have recovered the body of a kayaker who went missing after he was swept off the rocks at the Mokulua Islands off Lanikai.

According to the Honolulu Fire Department, the man was on Moku Nui on Saturday afternoon when a wave washed him and a friend off the rocks.

The friend managed to make it back to shore. Rescue crews responded shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday. A Coast Guard spokesman said the victim was 22 years old. A Coast Guard helicopter and patrol boat searched through the night. The fire department suspended its search Saturday night, and resumed the search at first light Sunday morning.

"At 2:51 in the afternoon, we were able to recover the body of the missing swimmer who was reported from the day before," said Honolulu Fire Capt. Robert Main. "Unfortunately, he was reported dead at the scene."

According to Main, the body was found about a hundred yards off shore. He said the search was especially difficult because of choppy four to six-foot seas, with consistent winds of at least 20 miles per hour. The man's body was returned to shore by helicopter.

A business that rents ocean equipment said the victim apparently used a privately-owned kayak to get to the island. Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks told its customers the Mokulua Islands were off-limits due to high surf.
