UH Warrior football program invited to join MWC

Posted: Updated:

MANOA (HawaiiNewsNow) - University of Hawaii president M.R.C. Greenwood announced Thursday night that the school has been asked to enter into final discussions to have the Warrior football team join the Mountain West Conference.

Greenwood says the school received a call Thursday afternoon from Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson, indicating that they wanted to begin discussions as soon as possible.

Hawaii is currently the longest tenured member of the Western Athletic Conference, having been in the WAC for 32 years. WAC schools Boise State, Nevada and Fresno State have already told the WAC they are leaving for the Mountain West.

Athletics Director Jim Donovan says the move has two major benefits. The first is the reduced travel costs, with many of the Mountain West schools being geographically closer to Hawaii than the WAC teams. Donovan also said the MWC provides Hawaii fans with competition against teams that they are more familiar with. He believes this will have a positive effect on box office sales.

Only the UH football program will make the switch to the MWC.

There are reports that all other UH sports could be headed to the Big West, but no announcement on this was made at Thursday night's press conference.
