HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Grow Hawaiʻi is a project of the Hawaiʻi Association of Independent Schools (HAIS) in partnership with the Hawaiʻi State Departments of Education & Agriculture, and the Ulupono Initiative.
Over the next three years, Grow Hawaiʻi will use a variety of strategies to significantly enrich the educational dialogue in all private and public schools statewide concerning the urgency for growing food in the islands.
Jenna Ishii, the Director of GROW Hawaii says that today's youth are two or more generations removed from the farm and food production. Yet the future of Hawaiʻi's ability to feed itself is dependent on them as they are the next generation of farmers, consumers and policy makers. Helping students to connect with local food production is an investment in developing a sustainable agricultural industry and key to increasing Hawaiʻi's food self-sufficiency.
On this morning's Sunrise, two students from Sacred Hearts Academy assisted Ryan Loo, the Senior Executive Sous Chef for Sheraton Hotels in Hawaii as he prepared pumpkin gnocchi from local ingredients.
