HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Local boy Andy South is quickly becoming a national fashion icon.

And Monday, the "Project Runway" finalist returned home to where it all began.

It's "Andy South Day" at his alma mater, Honolulu Community College.

The fashion department hosted a runway show in his honor.

South showed the actual clothes that won him a spot in the season eight finals.

He also debuted a few new designs.

South says it's important for him to keep the aloha spirit in such a catty industry.

"It is really tough because people have told me, 'Oh you're way too nice to survive there. They're going to chew you up.' But I think what I've proven is that you don't have to change who you are in an industry that says that you have to. I had to adapt, but I didn't have to be that person. because I'm not," South said.

South also called co-host Tim Gunn an inspiration and mentor.

And he said Heidi Klum is "A sweetheart and really goofy."
