UH Medical School receives generous anonymous gift

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The University of Hawaii Medical School recently got a huge unexpected surprise: a gift of one million dollars from an anonymous donor. The school says the money will go to its Center for Cardiovascular Research. Officials say they can now recruit new scientists to explore new ideas for treating heart disease.

"Heart disease is the number one killer of people in the United States. In Hawaii, we face especially difficult problems because we have a higher rate of diabetes in part because of our Polynesian and multicultural population" said Robert Hong, director of the cardiology fellowship program.

The school says this is the first time they've received such a generous donation from an anonymous source.
