Big City Diner

Aloha Friday means it's time for Cheap Eats. This week we're heading for a place that serves comfort food that's kicked up. Join Sam Choy and Lyle Galdeira in Kaimuki at Big City Diner. It's the home of big burgers and some of the best plate lunches around. Spacious, comfortable, and fun.

Lyle: Sam, we're in the big city.

Sam: Who Lyle, the big city on top of the hill?

Lyle: No, I mean in Kaimuki at Big City Diner. Homestyle comfort food.

That's right, it's the first Big City Diner in Kaimuki. For breakfast, lunch, dinner, even a snack late at night. Sam's in the kitchen with chef Sky Ogata making Big city's.

Sam: Famous kim chee fried rice.

Sky: First comes a mixture of meats. Looks like we're in your kitchen already Sam. You gotta go like this. Next comes some onions.

Sam: The secret to wok cooking is keeping it in the wok. Scrambled eggs, a mixture of brown and white rice are next. Then a heaping helping of fresh made kim chee. Mix it all up and voile.

Sky: Big City Diner's ultimate kim chee fried rice.

Lyle: Breakfast prices start in the five dollar range. Lunch and dinner selections begin at $7.50. Half pound big burgers are $6.50 and up. Big City customers all have their favorites.

Charla Vasconcellos of Waipahu: The garlic fries are tops, the fried rice, the loco moco.

Michael Downing of Manoa: For breakfast is the fish and eggs. The ahi and eggs. Once in a while, they'll treat me real special and give me the poke omelet. Broke da mouth.

It's Big City Diner in Kaimuki and it's this week's Cheap Eats.

Big City Diner is open seven days a week, right in Kaimuki on Waialae Avenue between 11th and 12th avenues.

If you know of a place that offers great food at a reasonable price let us know about it. Send Lyle an e-mail (lgaldeira@khnl.com) with your suggestion.
