HONOLULU (AP) - The University of Hawaii Board of Regents has voted unanimously to approve Donald Straney as the new chancellor of the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Straney, the dean of science at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, was nominated for the post by university President MRC Greenwood. She told the board Thursday that he's "extremely qualified" for the post.

Straney was one of five finalists to succeed Chancellor Rose Tseng. She announced nearly two years ago that she planned to resign this year from the post she has held since 1998. Two of the other finalists were Luoluo Hong, a vice chancellor at Hawaii Hilo, and John Pezzuto, founding dean of the Hawaii Hilo College of Pharmacy.
