Hawaii researchers warn of disease found on produce

Posted: Updated:

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A recent outbreak of a rare disease on the big island has University of Hawaii researchers trying to educate farmers, and families. The rat lungworm infection is spread by snails or slugs that leave parasites on unwashed produce.

UH scientists say there have been three recent cases.

Researchers have put together a booklet explaining the disease and how it spreads. Anyone who eats home-grown produce is urged to get a free copy from the College of Agriculture.
