ALA MOANA (HawaiiNewsNow) - The District of Hawaii's very first female U.S. Attorney is now officially appointed.
Wednesday afternoon, Florence Nakakuni made history as she was sworn in at the U.S. District Court in Ala Moana.
It was held at Chief District Judge Susan Oki Mollway's chambers.
But so many of Nakakuni's friends, family, and colleagues came, that another courtroom had to be opened to fit everyone.
In her speech, Nakakuni said there will be no room for partisanship in how the office is run, or how cases are handled.
"When we do a case, it is not that we have to win, it is that we have to do justice. We have to make sure that justice prevails, that justice is done. And that will be my guiding light in the years ahead as I lead the office," said Nakakuni.
Nakakuni's crime fighting career includes the past 24 years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Hawaii, which includes Saipan, Guam and American Samoa.
Nakakuni has also served four years as Chief of the Drug and Organized Crime section.
Nakakuni replaces Ed Kubo, who has been U.S. Attorney since 2001.
