Macfarlane set to defend flyweight title at Bellator 220

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Bellator women’s flyweight world champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane (9-0) will defend her title next weekend against striker Veta Arteaga at Bellator 220 in San Jose, California on April 27th.

Macfarlane is undefeated in her professional mixed martial arts career but believes Arteaga posses the biggest threat to her belt and unbeaten streak.

“I always say that every opponent of mine is the most dangerous I’ll ever face," Macfarlane said. "But I truly mean that about Veta. She is going to be my toughest fight and I say that because nothing intimidates this girl mentally. She is super strong and she is not scared.”

Arteaga comes in to the title bout with five victories and just two defeats and her brawler skill set is poses dangers to anyone standing in front of her.

Macfarlane is confident in all areas the fight may go and plans to lean on her fighting IQ to outwit Arteaga in areas where most of her opponents have not.

“I have to stick to the gameplan and be the smarter fighter," Macfarlane said. “A lot of her opponents have gotten sucked into her game which is standing in the pocket and brawling, even though we’re confident that I could beat her on the feet it’s like, why even give her that opportunity?”

This will be the first appearance back in the Bellator cage for Macfarlane following an unforgettable title defense on home soil in December of last year.

Bellator Hawaii proved to be a success both for the promotion and the state and Macfarlane believes with plethora of Hawaii fighters now with the Bellator promotion, it could return in the near future.

“Bellator Hawaii was such a success, why wouldn’t we come back?” Macfarlane said. “I know that Bellator definitely wants to be Hawaii’s own we have a lot of local fighters and signed some good fighters from the islands too, so I really feel that Bellator belongs to Hawaii now and I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”

Macfarlane vs. Arteaga is one of two title fights on the Bellator 220 card, which also includes a welterweight showdown between Jon Fitch and Rory McDonald.

The card will be broadcast live on DAZN on April 27th.
