HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The water off Waikiki might appear red Friday, but it will be intentional.
The city said it will be conducting red dye testing in the Waikiki area, specifically near the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
The reason: Officials want to “confirm what’s connected to the storm drain system.”
“The intent of the project is to minimize/eliminate the inflow of rain water entering our sewer system via storm drains associated with each property,” a city spokesman said. “Dye testing is one of the tools we used to identify cross connections.”
Waters offshore of Duke Kahanamoku Beach Park attached to the Hilton storm drain system could turn red as a result of the testing.
The message to beachgoers: Don’t be alarmed.
