HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Playing in front of a home crowd at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium was the best way that Mikaela Gandia-Mak could’ve started her collegiate career. But after she was named the Big West Freshman of the Week, she has surpassed even her own lofty expectations.
Gandia-Mak led the Wahine with a .500 batting average in the opening week of play, becoming the inaugural BWC Freshman of the Week awardee.
“I was just honestly hoping to just get an at-bat,” she said. “Just how I did, it’s even better. So I’m pretty happy about it.”
The freshman sensation went 6-for-12 at the plate, recording at least one hit in four of the five games of the games last week.
Gandia-Mak also scored three runs and drove in three more while swiping her first career stolen base. Her best performance came against Saint Mary’s in a 8-0 win where she scored two runs on 3-of-3 hitting while also driving in two of her Wahine teammates.
