HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Gusts topping 50 miles per hour were recorded in some areas of Hawaii Saturday, with a whopping 155 mile per hour gust at the summit of Mauna Kea, according to data from the National Weather Service.

And those winds are expected to get stronger, with a high wind warning effect statewide until 6 a.m. Monday. Sustained west winds of 20 to 40 miles per hour will be possible, with localized gusts to 60 miles per hour.

The strongest winds will be over and downslope of terrain, and in areas where the winds can be funneled by mountain ridges and valleys.

The winds are being generated by a powerful storm low pressure system that is dropping down toward the islands from the north. The low is also bringing very cold air to the state, with temperatures dropping into the mid 50s. Molokai Airport’s low temperature Sunday morning was 55 degrees, while Lihue had a low of 56 and Kahului 58.

Honolulu Airport’s low temperature was 61 degrees, while it got down to 63 at Kalaeloa Airport.
