HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - In her first fight back since last July, Waianae native Rachael Ostovich lost to UFC flyweight Paige VanZant via second round submission (armbar) in Brooklyn during the UFC’s debut on ESPN+
Ostovich dominated in the first round, outgrappling VanZant over the first five minutes of the fight. But while Ostovich was able to takedown VanZant at will, she couldn’t do much with her top control.
In the second round, VanZant came out showed some grappling skills of her own, locking in a vicious armbar that forced Ostovich to tap.
“I heard the arm pop,” VanZant said of Ostovich’s arm during the submission attempt. “I came back and I know she’ll come back strong too.”
Ostovich is now 4-5 in her career and 1-2 in the UFC. She competed two months after suffering orbital injuries in a domestic violence incident involving her husband, Arnold Berdon.
