HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Family and friends gathered to pay their final respects to a slack key guitar master and entertainer this weekend.
Mourners packed Kawaiahao Church Saturday for a memorial service celebrating the life of the great Cyril Pahinui.
The 19-time Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner and respected Vietnam veteran died in November.
He dealt with complications from a collapsed lung beginning in February 2016 and underwent several surgeries over the years.
“He was so well loved, but more than just the legendary musician, he was he was a friend to so many,” Rhonda Burk, a hula dancer for Pahinui said Saturday. “Anyone that stopped him to talk to him, we would stop even if that meant we’d leave two hours later.”
“When he played his music you felt his soul and that’s how it should be. If it’s from the heart it reaches the heart,” friend and entertainer Melveen Leed said.
Pahinui was 68 years old.
He is survived by his wife, five children, two brothers, two sisters and 19 grandchildren.
