Police: Man, 74, dies in multiple-vehicle crash on Kalanianaole Highway
Town-bound lanes were slow-going Sunday.

EAST OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man is dead following a multiple-vehicle crash on Kalanianaole Highway Sunday.

Emergency crews responded to the crash near East Halemaumau Street fronting the Niu Valley Shopping Center around 11:15 a.m.

When crews responded, they transported two patients to the hospital: A 74-year-old man who was listed in critical condition, and a 47-year-old man who was listed in serious.

Honolulu police confirmed Sunday afternoon that the 74-year-old later died at the hospital. His identity has not yet been released.

According to police, the 47-year-old driver was heading west when collided with another vehicle, which was being driven by the 74-year-old. In a chain reaction, that vehicle then hit a third vehicle, which then hit a fourth.

Drivers in the third and fourth vehicles suffered minor injuries and were treated on scene.

“At this time speed may have been a factor, while alcohol, and drugs do not appear to be factors in the collision,” police said.

HPD traffic investigators remained on scene until about 2 p.m. when the road was fully reopened.
