HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Former Gov. Ben Cayetano is recovering in the hospital after suffering a rare but dangerous heart condition earlier this week.
Cayetano’s wife, Vicky, said the former governor was taken by ambulance to Straub Hospital on Monday night after waking up with severe chest pains.
Doctors determine he’d suffered a dissection of his lower aorta — a fairly rare but very dangerous condition.
He was in intensive care until Thursday, when doctors decided he was stable enough to be moved to a regular room.
His wife says Cayetano is conscious and communicating, but needs rest and medication.
Cayetano served as Hawaii’s governor from 1994 to 2002.
