HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Peter Jung finished in 144th place after the first round of the 2019 Sony Open, tallying a score of 14-over par on the day.
But for the 16-year-old junior at Maryknoll School, there was no reason to feel bad about his performance. After all, how many local teenagers can say they went toe-to-toe with some of the world’s best golfers on one of the sport’s biggest stages?
“Today was tough,” Jung said. “I didn’t perform the way I wanted to but it was a great experience. Score-wise, it wasn’t the best but I think rather than that, it’s helped me a lot more.”
Jung wasn’t the only local player on the course as Brent Grant and Jared Sawada also went 18 holes on the day.
Grant shot a 2-over to finish T-112th, as did Sawada.
While Jung may be out of the hunt to make the cut after the second round, Hawaii is still being represented on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
