PUNA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Bulldozing crews on the Big Island began clearing an emergency route from Highway 1-37 into Pohoiki Friday.

The work is happening near Mackenzie State Recreation Area.

The county says the goal is to provide access to the residents and land owners isolated by the lava.

It will also give crews a chance to restore the area near Isaac Hale Park.
